A cloudburst in Kathua district of Jammu & Kashmir has once again shown how fragile the Himalayan region is during the monsoon season. The disaster occurred during the night of Saturday, August 16, and continued into the early hours of Sunday, August 17, 2025. The sudden burst of heavy rain in Jodh Ghati village, located in the Rajbagh area, triggered landslides and flash floods.
Officials confirmed that seven people have lost their lives in the tragedy, including five children. Several others were injured, and rescue operations are still underway.
The Incident in Detail
According to eyewitness accounts, the heavy rain started late at night. By 3:30 a.m., water had started gushing into homes and roads. Within minutes, a massive flow of mud, debris, and water swept through Jodh Ghati.
The sudden flash flood washed away houses, blocked roads, and damaged key infrastructure. The affected villages were cut off from the rest of the district for several hours.
Rescue teams, with the help of locals, managed to recover four bodies initially. Later, three more bodies were found, raising the total death toll to seven.
The victims include entire families. Parents and children were trapped in their homes when walls collapsed due to the force of the water.
Identities of the Victims
The district administration confirmed the identities of the deceased. Among them were:
- Renu Devi (39) and her daughter Radhika (9) from Janglote village.
- Surmu Din (30) along with his sons Fanu (6) and Shedu (5) from Jodh Ghati.
- Tahu (2) and Zulfan (15), also from the same locality.
The fact that five children died in this disaster has left the community heartbroken. Villagers gathered in shock as bodies were brought out from the debris.
Rescue and Relief Efforts
As soon as the cloudburst was reported, the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), local police, and Army teams reached the spot.
- Six injured persons were immediately airlifted to Mamoon Hospital in Pathankot, Punjab.
- Roads leading to the disaster site were badly damaged, slowing down the rescue work.
- The National Highway-44 and a nearby railway track also suffered damage due to landslides.
- Floodwater entered an industrial area and even reached a Kendriya Vidyalaya campus in Janglote.
The rescue operations continued through Sunday with excavators and manpower being used to clear debris.

Local residents described the scene as horrifying. One villager said, “We were sleeping when suddenly we heard a loud roar. Within minutes, water and mud entered our homes. We tried to save the children, but the flood was too strong.”
Another resident added, “It felt like the entire mountain had collapsed on us. People ran in panic, but many had no time to escape.”
Response From Authorities
Jammu Divisional Commissioner Ramesh Kumar confirmed that both SDRF and Army units were on site and providing assistance. He assured that more resources would be deployed if needed.
Chief Minister Omar Abdullah expressed deep sorrow. He said, “The loss of innocent lives in Kathua is heartbreaking. My prayers are with the families. The government will extend all possible support.”
Union Home Minister Amit Shah also spoke on the incident. He said that National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams have been rushed and relief work is being monitored at the highest level.
